from BARDO

The stars are in our belly; the Milky Way our umbilicus.

Is it a consolation that the stuff of which we’re made

is star-stuff too?

– That wherever you go you can never fully disappear –

dispersal only: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen.

Tree, rain, coal, glow-worm, horse, gnat, rock.

Her Spine

How
might
we
step
on
the
earth’s
thin
skin
if
not
by
treading
lightly?

Poem written for the 'spine road' at Cotswold Water Park as part of the Genius Loci project 2001. This was later carved into charred oak, as others of my poems have been, by Michael Fairfax: http://www.michaelfairfax.co.uk/treadinggently.html
