The stars are in our belly; the Milky Way our umbilicus.

Is it a consolation that the stuff of which we’re made

is star-stuff too?

Tree, rain, coal, glow-worm, horse, gnat, rock.

merristems

All night storm
now a northerly with sleet in its teeth
snow of sheep on the far hill
and still
the thrush sings spring
from the ash's soot-tipped merristems
and hazel catkins come
