from BARDO

The stars are in our belly; the Milky Way our umbilicus.

Is it a consolation that the stuff of which we’re made

is star-stuff too?

– That wherever you go you can never fully disappear –

dispersal only: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen.

Tree, rain, coal, glow-worm, horse, gnat, rock.

If you are broken

even if you don’t believe, lay your body
like a prayer on the moist dark earth

be bathed in the tongues of water
springing like woodflowers

from the rocks around you. Feel the hands
of sun, of moon, radiant on your brow.

And night too will come, ‘dropping slow’ –
allow this. Allow this birth –

star in the eye of the universe
cell in the body of earth.
